Free Up Disk Space: Move large files that you aren’t using right now to an external hard drive or delete duplicate files.
Remove items on your Recycle Bin: Especially those movies you’ve already watched!
Keep your antivirus running and up to date: Set a reminder for yourself in your calendar to run a scan once a week. And keep your antivirus updated.
Upgrade your RAM: Install more RAM to speed up your computer.
Clean up system files: Open disk cleanup > Run > Clean up system files > Clean out service packs.
Uninstall programs: Click Start button>Control Panel>Programs>Programs and Features>Select a program>Click Uninstall.
How to decrease boot time in Mac:
Remove unwanted startup items and fonts: Open Font Book from the Applications folder>Highlight problematic fonts>Right-click and select Remove <font> or Remove <font> Family. Apple has a list of fonts that it includes with OS X Lion which can be used as reference for removing the others.
Periodically check system health: From the Apple Menu choose About this Mac>Click on the More Info button>Choose System report to list your Mac hardware and see the status and properties of all installed components.
